I admit I am a believer in this system and am even implementing into my business schedule. While we knew our products at Fortunately For You Books were highly compatible with this system, we were validated when Sue wrote to us and told us how well our products and here system would work well together. Any of the activities from this Remember Me Pocket can be placed into a box for the student to work. These make wonderful fill ins to a days assignments. I guarantee the kids will love the box with FFYB papers in it!

Blessings,
Shannon Coe

Big Hit!

Our Remember Me Pockets were a big hit at conventions this year! People did not seem to mind the smaller sized May file. We adjusted the price for this file, but it is still loaded with 24 activites! My personal favorites were:

Jamestown Mini Lapbook
Comic Strip Comprehension
National Police Week
National Wildflower Week
and National Day of Prayer

Ok, that was hard to choose favorites when I love the whole file! I always love the interviews offered in the Remember Me Pockets. For some reason, putting this information in a conversation style is a much more interesting way to learn! Be assured our FFYB reporter asks some very interesting questions!

We are beginning work on the June file- YES- we are making summer files!! Many people have been asking about that. There is so much happening in June it is hard to pick! But alas, we want to enjoy summer to, so we will narrow it down to a size that keeps us all happy.

~Shannon

Updated Answer Key for William Shapespeare- RMA

The Remember Me Pockets-April file has an activity on April 23 for William Shakeseare.
The updated answer key is as follows:

GRAY
BLUE
CORAL
PURPLE
PINK
BROWN
MAGENTA
LIGHT GREEN
DARK GREEN
ORANGE
BLACK
YELLOW
LAVENDAR
RED
LIGHT BLUE

Remember Me Pockets- April

I cannot imagine what the Remember Me Pockets are going to look like in September if every Pocket keeps getting better and better! Every month we have creative ideas that make the files bigger and filled with wonderful ideas! This month is no exception. Here is quick overview of what is covered in the Remember Me Pocket-April file:

3 highlighted authors and assessments- in depth biographies with assessments

6 author tags- quick tag projects to familiarize students with authors and their works

8 interviews- FFYB's reporter interviews certain people who celebrate a birthday in April. There are two assessments with this project.

4 monthly activities- National Humor Month, Poetry Month, National Garden Month, International Guitar Month (booklet studying the history and differences of acoustic and electric guitars)

4 weekly activities- National Wildlife Week(learning about animals and the habitats they belong in) National Park Week (travelogue approach, postcard writing skill), National Volunteer Week(providing ideas and accountability for volunteer work), Astronomy Week (new!!! Bracket Writing Format-designed specifically for reluctant writers and narrators)

11 daily activities- April Fool's Day (how it got its name), The April Four(four presidents who have birthdays in April-bio and checklist assessment), 2 artists(wall of time assessment-Raphael, da Vinci), US Mint (flap book covering the history of each type of coin) Pony Express Day (3Dtimeline), Modern Olympics, Scrabble, Sinking of the Titanic, Ellis Island Family History(Internet Scavenger Hunt/Puzzle), Ford Mustang Day(Reading Records), Revolutionary War (new!! mini lapbook activity)

Special Days- Easter(secular and religious activities), Earth Day

NEW!- Writing Prompts

I am most excited about the two new formats designed this month. The mini lapbook was created for this month using the history subject of the Revolutionary War. This lapbook is a small enough one to finish in a day or two. There are options for older and younger students alike. Along with the text we provide for the lessons, this mini lapbook is perfect for a day or two history lesson.
The other new format is the Bracket Writing format. Using color codes and a simple bracket design, we teach readers to break down information into simple lines, look for key details. They are basically creating an outline, but in a more colorful and left to right reading format. This is designed with the idea that most students simply cannot break down information and reword it simply because they cannot see it in the text. This format is perfect for training the eye to see thoughts within paragraphs. I cannot wait to hear how your writers did on this project! Also beneficial to students who have no trouble writing, is to take the same activity and complete it orally, because narrating is just as important as writing when it comes to communicating as an adult.
Writing prompts have a spring flavor in this file. We added a new element to the month by giving creative writers the SPRINGboard they need. Using every letter of the alphabet as the guide, you can pick only letters from the student's name, letters for the month, or all the letters! If your student has difficulty with actually writing, let them narrate and you record their thoughts for them, use a video log to let them record oral stories, or use a tape recorder to tape them. There are so many options for every type of learner.

Blessings to you all,
~Shannon

Lance Mackey has won!!!!

Congrats to:
Lillyana
Elisabeth P.
Colton S.
David H.
Ben H.
Mikayla K.
Julia H.
Anna K.
The Pool Family

The winners are receiving our Remember Me Pockets: April for FREE (upon release) AND a $15 gift card to Barnes and Noble.com!!!! Every reluctant learner, and every student that learns best with hands on approaches will benefit from this file. One of the best things about our own formats that we have created is that our hands on approaches do not make mom have to work the evening before preparing! We have creatively fused hands on learning with paper work.
Great men celebrate their birthdays this month and we took the time to send our FFYB reporter to help us learn about them. Wyatt Earp reveals a side of himself that few people see. Most people see a violent side and only read about him from one gun fight he was involved in. Our reporter found out that he had a heart to protect people in towns and wanted them to be safe from wicked men who would hurt them. Men who made history, such as the astronaut Yuri Gagarin and Alexander Graham Bell tell us how they go to the time in history that they changed the world we live in. Men who seem to have magic in their hands share their success and lessons learned with us. While Houdini was a master at escaping and Sam Walton had business savvy, magic was not the key to their success. Being prepared for opportunities that came their was.
The finer arts are taught to students with activities for Michelangelo and Van Gogh. Bach and Andrew Lloyd Webber have their birthdays remembered this month also.
To reminding our children how great America is we spend some time learning about the American Red Cross and American Chocolate Week. You didn't think we would not have food in our file, did you? We even slipped in a Maple Syrup study. We do have a lesson on poultry, but we went the scientific route, not the food route with that one.
One of our new applications to learning in this file is a BAG IT UP REPORT. We have been mulling and thinking this activity over for many months and found just the right way to debut this new format. Especially designed for children you have mental breakdowns when it comes time to give an oral report, we took the pain out of this for them. Most children who struggle with oral reports are visual learners, so we give them little visual reminders to place in a bag. When they pull out the item from the bag there will be a little note for them to see that will trigger something to say. It is fantastic and I cannot wait to hear feed back from you! We used three presidents who have birthdays this month in this report.
Eyes are turned to the things of the Lord when we introduce David Livingstone and World Day of Prayer to students. Teaching children about several places on our planet where surviving life is a daily matter of prayer will help children tune up on their thankfulness for what we have in our country and even in these hard times. Learning about a man who had a heart for missions and fused it with his love for exploring will encourage students to know that God can take their natural desires and use them for His kingdom.
Butterflies, peanuts, Mt. Rushmore, and Daylight Savings Time give students activities in ways that they will remember them. To help them learn about events and cultures beyond our borders, we created a passport learning method for children to learn about national anthems. Every country has a song they love and honor. We also transport the kids to France to learn about the Eiffel Tower.
The Iditarod is given a place of honor in our file. This Last Great Race on Earth is filled with history, challenge, cheering, and learning to daily track and record achievements. This is a great activity in this file! I hope your kids get as excited as ours when we pick our mushers and cheer them on everyday.
As we are all Irish on the 17th, we have included an activity fun file, but we also took the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the people of the Isle. As an Irish lass me self, I approve these lessons!
So many more things are covered in this file. We have our focus on children who want to learn, who desire to learn, but need something different with their worksheets and styles of learning.
Between Kelly, Heidi, and myself, we have every type of learner there is! When we create lessons and activities, we have learned that if the students are suffering, then the tools are not effective. I hope you give our Remember Me Pockets- March a try.
Please write and let us know what activities you used and likes, how the students responded to the activities that were hands on, and if you saw their reluctance for learning lessening when you use our products!

Many Blessings in this Wonderful Month of March!
FFYB

REMEMBER

Remember all you Remember Me March Purchasers to email us with your child's Iditarod Musher choice. I'm not a blogger. We did finish February's Remember Me Pockets and the kids loved that time together. We learned so much! I can just see them on Jeopardy one day answering a question about the plethora of things we learned. Can I train them now to say "I learned it thanks for Fortunately For You Books"? :o)

March's Remember Me is out and ready to be purchased. It is bigger and even better than February's. I think I will say that about every new month's file! hahaha

We enjoy creating them for you and I hope that you enjoy working on them! I will not promise to try to post everyday about March's file. I know better....in fact I have absolutely no idea where my camera is. (I am in the midst of a semi-big laundry room upgrade. I sit here typing to you with paint on my fingers.) I will post every now and again about Remember Me March's activities and hope Shannon and Heidi jump in to fill in my gaps (hint hint).

~Kelly, FFYB

Feb 16-Remember Me February

PRESIDENT'S DAY!

Before we did the President's Day Match-Up we did the Valentine's Day Activities:

Then my kids chose to do the HARD option and did all the President's and their facts all at one time. We also read about Edison and talked about the importance of the Steam power that Fulton made functional. We've also been trying to do random acts of kindness around the house for the beginning of random acts on Wednesday. What a great lesson to teach kids. May we do this year round and not just on a yearly basis!

TIP: For those of you going to print and prepare the President's Day Game--set your printer to fast draft. It doesn't give you a high quality printing but it does save you ink! Let us know how your kids do with that game. I'm VERY interested to see how well (or not so well) my own kids do on this game! Before you cut the page, let the child study over it first. If you don't know your President's well you may want to do this somewhere around your computer or print out duplicates so you can check! :o)

Feb 6, 9, 10- February's REMEMBER ME POCKETS

Forgive me for not posting! Whether it is overcoming illness, poverty, war, or social crisis’, all of the people in this file are honored for their ingenuity and perseverance. Remembering them is a good thing to do, learning from them is even better!
From a scientific viewpoint, the month of February is rich with information. Charles Lindbergh, Thomas Edison, Galileo Galilei, Nicolas Copernicus are all interviewed. Questions about their life, what they accomplished, how they were educated are all asked by our FFYB reporter. Whole days are set apart to learn from scientific events also. Ferris Wheel Day should certainly be celebrated and the thought of riding a Ferris wheel at the summer fairs will warm us up in this cold and windy month. Patenting steamboats, orbiting the earth, and learning from weatherman are activities that will teach us about overcoming. Inventions take patience, money, and many blueprints to get a product ready to be patented or safe for people to ride on. Orbiting the earth was no small thing, and many difficulties had to be overcome to take John Glen safely in to orbit and bring him back again. And yes, we even honor the weatherman, as he has to overcome all our doubts and jokes!
Sports have earned their place in this file with the birthdays of Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth. Our FFYB reporter spends some time with each of these gentlemen and learns some valuable lessons about overcoming odds as children.
History is learned all month long with the celebration of Black History Month. Many great Americans who overcame prejudice, slavery, and poverty are honored with a place in this file. We build on the January files lessons by creating a booklet filled with information about the great and sacrificial work done, mostly quiet and behind the scenes of people who loved their country and believed that God loved all men equally. A game format helps students learn about the Presidents of the United States as we take a whole day to honor presidents! Interesting and informative information is given about each president on a card, while the picture of the man is on another card. Use two or three cards at a time for the younger student, but older students will be challenged at a game of match ups when a larger collection is used.
Learning about animals and geography are in fun forms as Polar Bear Day and Ground Hog Day are so special that the nation sets time on this month to learn about them. Geography is learned by taking the National Pancake Week Tour around the world. There is no better way to learn culture, flags, and maps than by learning how everyone eats pancakes! The Grand Canyon is also offering tours to learn about this awesome natural wonder.
Writing takes fun forms this month with Write a Fairy Tale Day and Send a Card to a Friend Day. While one activity is whimsical and uses creativity, sending cards to friends is a practical life skill that can be started in this month. Making or picking out cards takes time and thought, but the rewards are worth the effort. We take time this month to have fun with writing, for ourselves and for others.
Jell-O Week, American Heart Month, and National Cherry Month provide the student with health and food lessons. The Proclamation for American Heart Month issued by a President of the United States offers the learning text with a list making booklet used as the evaluation. Learning about the health benefits of cherries is interesting stuff! And who doesn’t love Jell-O? Celebrate Jell-O by learning about gelatin and making some recipes.
As believers, it is impossible for us not to view aspects of history without a Biblical perspective. Our Valentines Day activity has a historical element and an optional Scriptural lesson for taking our love and directing it towards the One who is most worthy. Random Acts of Kindness Week takes a basic Biblical teaching and puts it into action, “Be ye kind”.
And as always, our love for reading and our desire to make reading a lifetime love for students, we have created special hands on assessments for three very special authors, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Jules Verne, and John Steinbeck. All three authors have birthdays this month and all three wrote from experiences they had or from issues they were passionate about. All Little House Fans will want this ebook as we take a hands on way of learning about Laura and her life. Many other authors are given honorable mentions and are introduced to students in a way to make them familiar with an author’s name and several pieces of well known works.
You will enjoy using these learning tools all throughout the month. Educating students doesn’t have to be hard and boring. Sometimes all you need is a different perspective and cool comprehension tools that kids like. Fortunately For You Books provides you with both! FFYB's Remember Me Pockets are great for kids of any age or grade. Use from a Kindergarten level through Seniors in High School! Our product gives the substance you want at a price you can afford!

THE FEBRUARY FILE!

What to expect in the Remember Me Pockets- February:

Author Highlight: Laura Ingalls Wilder, Jules Verne, John Steinbeck

Author Mentions: Charles Dickens, Fred Gipson, Judith Viorst, Norman Bridwell, Wilhelm Grimm, Henry Longfellow

Birthdays and Biographies: Norman Rockwell, Charles Lindbergh, Thomas Edison, Galileo Galilei, Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Nicolas Copernicus, Buffalo Bill Cody

Monthly Highlights: Black History Month, American Heart Month, National Cherry Month

Weekly Highlights: Jello Week, Random Acts of Kindness Week, National Pancake Week

Daily Highlights: Ground Hog Day, Send a Card to a Friend Day, Fulton Patents a Steamboat, Ferris Wheel Day, John Glenn Orbits the Earth, Iwo Jima Day, Tell a Fairy Tale Day, Grand Canyon Day, Polar Bear Day

Holidays: Valentines Day, Presidents Day

How about that?!

Yes, We Do!

Should anyone wonder, yes, we use our own products! And today was a fantastic day to use the Martin Luther King Jr. mini wall of time and lesson plans in our Remember Me Pocket-January file.
My 11th grader reads the bio, then by memory makes the wall of time. He loves that it is quick, efficient, and different than all other assessments he has ever done. He likes that the wall itself reveals whether you knew your stuff. I am most pleased with the mini walls and hope to be able to make many more.
My 7th grader benefits from these mini walls in a different way. He is dyslexic and to put these assessments into a visual and hands on approach is gold for him. Sometimes the knowledge gained from investigating the lives of some of the chosen ones makes me grieve for some incredibly talented and God gifted people who seem to have passed through life with no recognition of their Creator. That makes me more purposeful to teach my children that their talents and gifts are endowed to them and they are to use these gifts for a greater purpose.

Right now I am studying Thomas Edison. His birthday falls in the next month so he was picked to be remembered. I am so glad we picked him.

What hope and what validation. Scripture is true when it proclaims "There is nothing new under the sun" and how right we consistently find that to be true when studying lessons of the past.

Thomas Edison was in school for three months when his teacher proclaimed him "addled". He couldn't sit still or pay attention very long. He was being treated badly by the teacher for this and Thomas' mother found out. She removed him from the school and "home taught" him his remaining years. His basic learning tools were books and the library as they couldn't afford to keep buying him books. Thomas credits his mother with saving his education.

I am rejoicing for all of homeschooling moms as I write an interview page for Thomas Edison.

There is nothing new: children from all ages have had trouble sitting still for hours upon hours to learn. Learning at home has been a proven method for successful education for many years.

Hooray for us!

~Shannon

Remember Me on January 3rd

Construction on the Brooklyn Bridge began on January 3, 1870. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States and is a National Landmark. The New York City skyline wouldn't be the same without this bridge in it! Perhaps your child would be interested in gathering some facts about this bridge.

Use some of these links to answer these questions:

1. Who designed the bridge?

2. What river does this bridge cross?

3. How long did it take to complete the bridge?

4. Is there a toll to cross the bridge?

Answers to these four questions can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Bridge

Interesting facts about the designer of the bridge can be found here:

http://www.endex.com/gf/buildings/bbridge/bbridgefacts.htm

Writing down 5 interesting facts about this man would make a great activity.

A virtual field trip can be taken with this site.
